Special Weapons & Tactics (SWAT)
Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services has eight Paramedics who have undergone very rigorous and intense training and serve as Tactical Medics with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department S.W.A.T. team. These Tactical Medics respond with CMPD S.W.A.T. Officers for such incidents as hostage crises, barricaded suspects, high-risk warrants, and dignitary protection.
After completing an intense tryout and interview process, the Tactical Medics go to specialized training and education which includes the Counter Narcotics Tactical Operations Medical Support (CONTOMS) program provided by the U.S. Department of Defense and Basic Special Weapons and Tactics Training provided by the N.C. Justice Academy. The team performs 24 hours of training a month with CMPD S.W.A.T. in addition to all requirements to maintain their Paramedic certification with MEDIC.
